General

Frequently Asked Questions Answers
How can I tell the sex of an Indian Ringneck?  Unless you have a bird DNA sexed you cannot be sure of the sex until maturity at 18 - 36 months.
How to stop my bird from "nipping" or biting? click here for detail answer
What is the average life span of an IRN? With proper care and diet - there have reports of IRNs living up to 25 years of age.
What kind of personality do IRNs have? click here for more detail answer
How do I tell the difference in sexes and when without DNA sexing? IRNs reach sexual maturity at 3 years of age, however some will show definite coloring of ring from one year but with the many mutations that are coming along the time is varying more and more.  For more details click here.
How big a cage does an IRN need? The largest you can afford and fix into your environment.  At least large enough for the bird to exercise it's wings by flapping - usually about 21X21X25"  and remember to allow for IRNs long tails.
Do IRNs bite strangers or
prefer to hiss and back off from them?
Most IRNs tend to be skittish and nervous around strangers and try to bluff them off...however if they feel provoked be prepared for a nasty bite!
Do they enjoy their toys and
what kind of toys do they prefer to play with?
Mine enjoy toys; especially balls with bells in
them and also anything they can safely chew and destroy.
What is the standard color of an IRN and what is a mutation?  Normal green is "standard". For information on mutations, click here.

Caring

Frequently Asked Questions Answers
What do IRNs eat? Almost anything...however the best diet is pellets along with fresh fruit and vegetables daily.  Be sure to avoid toxic foods.  See safety list.
How can I tell if my bird is sick? click here for detailed answer

Training

Frequently Asked Questions Answers
How do you train an IRN? First with a lot of love and trust.  Never physically reprimand a bird!  And be prepared for a nip or two! I am in process of writing a detailed article.
How old are IRNs when they begin to talk? Not all birds will talk.  There are no guarantees that anyone can give you.  IRNs do make great talkers - if they are inclined to do so!  From personal experience, the younger you begin with the bird the better.  But older birds have and can learn to talk.
Can you tame a grown IRN? This is a very difficult one to answer.  There are so very many factors that so much depends.  Most all can be tamed to the point not getting bitten when doing general maintenance for them. But it can be a very long, slow process - but well worth the effort!
